I am a benthic ecologist, which means I study the communities of animals that live on and in the seafloor, but for this project I am working primarily on pelagic, or water column, research.  Initially our proposed research coupled the benthic and pelagic components of this ecosystem together, but in the funding process the seafloor component got eliminated.  So I am overseeing the engineering component comprising the Remotely Operated Vehicle SCINI, which was developed in my lab.  We have added sonar and fluorometry capabilities that allow us to directly track the lower levels of the Antarctic food web.  In addition, my long experience working in the US Antarctic Program has allowed me to guide the project through the mysterious and challenging vagaries of the support system with a minimum (!) of major disasters.  And I still sneak in benthic ecology whenever I get the chance!
